Research from Tehran University of Medical Sciences’ Psychiatric Research Center in 2004 examined the benefits of an extract of Crocus sativus (Saffron) on mood. This short-term, pilot, double-blind randomized trial determined that 30mg of Saffron per day showed a similar positive effect on mood as 100 mg/day of imipramine. The main overall finding from this study is that saffron may be of therapeutic benefit in the treatment of mild to moderate depression. Thiswas the first clinical trial that supports this indication for saffron, but further investigation is required..
