The Link between Sugar and Cancer- Be Warned!
Sugar. You add it to your morning cup of coffee or tea. It is in your pastries, cakes, and cookies. You even sprinkle it all over your breakfast cereal or your oatmeal for added “flavour.” Sure, we’ve all heard that it’s bad for our health, but it can’t be that bad, now, can it? Well, let us look at some facts and find out.
Sugar: Consumption at a Crossroads
A 2013 study carried out by Credit Suisse Research Institute’s “Sugar: Consumption at a Crossroads,” showed that as much as 40 percent of U.S. healthcare expenditures are for diseases directly related to the overconsumption of sugar, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. Moreover, according to many alternative medicine practitioners and integrative medicine doctors, sugar and obesity directly increase chances of cancer. Day by day, more and more prominent scientists recognise this.
Research Links Sugar to Cancer
An increasing number of medical scientists, integrative medicine doctors, and many alternative medicine practitioners know that the most logical, effective, safe, necessary and inexpensive way to treat cancer is to cut off the supply of food to cancer cells by starving them with a lack of glucose. The therapeutic strategy does not necessary align with mainstream medical dogma. But there is evidence from research published by Graeber et al in 2012 that depriving cancer cells of glucoseresult of the toxic accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) whichactivates a metabolic and signalling amplification loop that leads to the death of cancer cells.Previous studies have shown a connection between sugar and inflammation that can lead to cancer development.
Another convincing study in mice published recently the journal Cancer Research has revealed that increased consumption of sugar increases the risk of breast cancer. As co-author Lorenzo Cohen told NBC News, ‘A lot of patients are told it doesn’t matter what you eat after you are diagnosed with cancer. This preliminary animal research suggests that it does matter”

Prevention is better than cure
The one common thing that mainstream medicine, integrative medicine, traditional medicine and alternative medicine all agree is that increased sugar consumption leads to diabetes! Now there is a growing body of evidence linking diabetes to liver, pancreatic, endometrial, colorectal, breast and bladder cancers. Furthermore, we know that metformin, a common medication used to reduce insulin resistance in people with diabetes, is being studied, for its potential benefit as a cancer therapy. So while mainstream healthcare catches up to the ‘common sense approach’ to reducing sugar consumption for cancer treatment and prevention, we consumers need to be on the ‘front foot’ as it is undeniable that there are too many studies that have shown increased cancer rates are linked to a bad daily diet. Ignoring dietary and lifestyle modification as a cancer prevention tool is foolhardy at best. Science is now confirming what traditional and alternative medicine practitioners have known for a long time that a Western-style diet and lifestyle choices of tobacco use, an unhealthy diet and a lack of exercise are major risk factors for many types of cancer.
